Advancing Tuberculosis Prevention: Screening, Diagnosis, and Short-Course Regimens

Updates from the Experts with Alanna J. Bergman, PhD, RN, AGNP-BC

Alanna J. Bergman, PhD, RN, AGNP-BC will review current best practices in tuberculosis screening and diagnosis with an emphasis on identifying and managing tuberculosis infection. It highlights the growing role of rifamycin-based regimens and newer short-course preventive therapies that improve adherence and outcomes.  We will discuss practical considerations for selecting, monitoring, and implementing these regimens in diverse clinical settings. 

At the conclusion of this session, participants will:

• Compare available TB screening and diagnostic tools including indications, advantages and limitations to accurately identifying TB infection and differentiating from TB disease. 
• Evaluate rifamycin-based and other short course preventive therapy regimens for TB infection including safety, efficacy, drug-drug interactions, and adherence considerations.
• Apply evidence-based strategies to select and implement appropriate TB preventive treatment regimens in clinical practice, including monitoring for adverse effects and ensuring treatment completion.

• Integrate new research and evidence-based approaches into professional practice to optimize healthcare delivery, professional satisfaction, and patient outcomes.
• Describe strategies for translating current evidence to practice settings.
• Identify gaps in the current knowledge base that, through new research, could be addressed to improve population health.
