More Than a Wound: Classifying skin failure from HAPI

Alumni Spotlight Series with alumnae Michelle Longley and Ellen Smith
For years, skin wounds have been considered preventable hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) and therefore perceived as failures in nursing and medical practice. However, with increasing discussion of skin failure, the unavoidable nature of these skin changes at the end of life or near end-of-life necessitates accurate skin injury classification. Accurate classification of skin failure can determine prevention and treatment interventions for pressure injury versus supportive care for skin failure. This alignment improves the use of healthcare resources, and accurate classification will reduce penalties for healthcare providers/organizations.
A virtual presentation by alumnae Michelle Longley, DNP, RN, NP-C, AGCNBS-BC (BSN ’06, MSN ’08, CNS ’20), UVA Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and its fall and HAPI prevention metric lead, restraint lead, and NDNQI site coordinator, and Ellen Smith, BSN, RN, LSSBB (BSN ’84), UVA Health performance improvement coach. Part of the School's Nursing Alumni Spotlight series and a Continuing Education event.
